Windows and Doors Glossary

Clear definitions. Better project decisions.

Understand the terms used in window and door drawings, specifications, and quotations. Explore frame details, installation parts, glass components, sizing, and Australian standards in plain English.

Installation Components

The parts that connect, support, seal, and finish a window or door installation.

Timber Reveals

Wooden boards fitted around an aluminium frame to help secure the window or door to the wall and finish the inside edges neatly.

Aluminium Subframes

An extra aluminium frame installed in the wall opening. The main window or door fits into it, making fitting and sealing easier.

Subhead

A channel above a window or door that leaves space for the structure above to move slightly without pressing down on the frame.

Subsill

Sub-sill

A tray under a window or door that catches water and drains it outside, helping keep the surrounding wall dry.

Subjamb

An extra side frame that allows for small differences in the wall opening’s size. Some designs also allow for slight wall movement.

Stop Ends

Caps sealed to both ends of the drainage tray beneath a window or door, stopping water from leaking sideways into the wall.

Aluminium Fin

Snap-off Fin

A thin edge that sticks out from the aluminium frame to help attach it during installation. Snap-off versions are designed to be removable.

Closer Trim

Inline Reveal Trim

A finishing strip that covers the join between the aluminium frame and the surrounding lining, creating a neat inside edge.

Brickmould

Brickmold / Brick Mould

Exterior trim around a window or door that covers the gap between the frame and the outer wall, creating a neat finished edge.

Drywall Return

Frame detail: Drywall Return Channel

A groove on the inside of a window frame that accepts the plasterboard edge, creating a neat finish without a separate wooden surround.

Block Frame

Box Frame — installation context

A window or door frame without a projecting installation fin, often used in masonry openings or when replacing an existing unit.

Flush Flange

A wide outer lip that covers the joint around a replacement window, often allowing installation without removing the surrounding stucco finish.

Jamb Extension

Jamb Extender / Extension Jamb

An added piece that extends the inside of a window or door frame to match the wall thickness and meet the finished wall surface.

Wood Buck

A wooden frame secured inside a wall opening, often in concrete or brick, providing a fixing surface for a window or door.

Sill Pan

Sill Pan Flashing

A waterproof tray or lining beneath a window or door that catches leaks and directs water outside before it reaches the wall below.

Hollow Sump Sill

A bottom frame section with a hollow chamber that collects water and drains it outside through drainage openings.

Check the system detail: Drywall Return refers here to the frame channel that receives plasterboard. Match the channel to the specified board thickness. Sill pans sit beneath the unit; a hollow sump sill is part of its bottom frame.

Sizing & Measurement

Understand which edges are being measured before comparing drawings or confirming an order.

Stud Opening

Abertura aproximada

The width and height of the wall opening prepared for a window or door, including extra space around the unit for installation.

Reveal Size

Outside of Reveal Size

The total width and height measured to the outside edges of the wooden surround, rather than just the aluminium frame.

Aluminium Frame Size

Net Frame Size

The actual width and height of the aluminium frame itself, not including wooden surrounds, separate outer frames, or installation gaps.

Before confirming dimensions: “Reveal size” can also mean reveal depth. Use “outside of reveal size” for overall width and height, and confirm the measurement convention on your drawings.

Glass Components

Understand the small parts used within insulated glass units.

Capillary Tube

A tiny tube in an insulated glass unit that balances internal and outside air pressure, helping protect the glass when altitude changes.

Glass specification matters: Capillary tubes balance pressure inside the glass unit, not water in the window frame. Confirm their use and the glass specification with the manufacturer.

Australian Standards & Classifications

Key references for understanding Australian window, door, and glazing specifications.

AS 2047

Windows and external glazed doors

An Australian standard for checking how well windows and external glass doors resist wind, air leaks, and rainwater, and how easily they open and close.

AS 1288

Glass in buildings

An Australian standard for choosing and fitting glass in buildings, including glass thickness, support, and safety requirements to help reduce injuries.

BAL

Bushfire Attack Level

An Australian rating showing how severely a bushfire could affect a building. It helps determine protection against flying embers, heat, and flames.

Regional context: AS 2047 and AS 1288 are Australian standards. BAL describes bushfire exposure, not a universal product certification. Confirm the applicable requirements for your project location.
